Dolphin Watching is a favourite past time for many Sydneysiders and is a great activity for visitors to enjoy during their holiday to Sydney.

Most tours from Sydney last for half a day and are suitable for all ages and fitness levels. You can choose between tours where you remain on the boat and watch for dolphins, or there are also tours where you can enter the water and swim with these magnificent animals. For tours where you swim with dolphins, wetsuits and snorkels are often supplied, and you’ll receive instruction from a qualified dolphin expert and be supervised in the water.

Bottlenose dolphins are commonly seen along the NSW coast, and two of the best locations for dolphin spotting are Jervis Bay on the South Coast and Port Stephens, just north of Newcastle. Dolphins are also seen in the Great Lakes region, with dolphin watching tours run from all these locations.

Take a day trip to Port Stephens and enjoy getting up close with the more than 100 bottlenose dolphins that call this place home. An added benefit of this tour is that you can also combine it with the whale watching tour, as Port Stephens is also one of the places that the migrating humpback whales pass through.

Jervis Bay is home to 120 bottlenose dolphins, so there’s a high chance you will spot a dolphin, but it also works because you can take a tour at any time of the year. A visit to Jervis Bay will take you on a huge catamaran with three decks and five great viewing platforms for your convenience. Many tours are inclusive of complimentary tea and snacks.

Make sure you bring your bathers, towel and sunscreen as the tour does not provide these. You are welcome to bring your camera and take as many photos as you like.
