Rodd Island

Rodd Island is a beautiful destination located just off Birkenhead Point with some of the most beautiful views Sydney has to offer.

The island, which is also referred to as Rabbit, Snake and Jack Island, is a little piece of heaven right in the middle of the harbour. The island got its name from Brent Clements Rodd, a local who made history by attempting to purchase the island for his family way back in 1842. Years later, the island was named Sydney’s very first recreational reserve open to the public.

Over the years, it has been used for research purposes, for army training, and even as a factory. Today, the island is a fun recreational reserve ideal for the whole family.

Set up a picnic to the west of the island to enjoy the panoramic views as the little ones run around. Remember to pack a picnic lunch, as you can make a booking to secure picnic spots.

Once you’ve had your fill, stroll through the lush gardens and enjoy a bit of nature. Learn a little more about the island’s history as you venture out and explore the historic buildings.

Look out for the two summer houses and don’t miss out on the historic dance hall on the island – walking here gives you a surreal picture of what life was like back then.

The island is a unique venue and provides a magical background for all kinds of events; from weddings to family functions and even corporate events. For this purpose, there’s a hall and two gazebos available for hire.

Rodd Island is accessible by boat, kayak and water taxi. Entry fees are applicable, but children below four years are allowed in free of charge.
