Sydney Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Festival 2025 Dates, Program & Tickets
Australia’s largest celebration of local and global sci-fi and fantasy film culture, the fifth annual event is unlike any version of the festival that has gone before, with stunning artistry and truly independent visions from nine countries amongst the 28 films in competition this year.
The films we offer this year are unapologetically introspective, dramatic works that address themes such as dysfunctional family dynamics, toxic masculinity, companionship, dark sexuality, and the bond created among unique and diverse personalities. The line-up combines the anxiety of modern living, the prevalence of new technologies, and our dreams for the future.
Some highlights across the 2024 Program included an Opening Night that has “gone to the dogs”, with a canine-themed double-feature that includes the World Premiere of the moving Australian film HEEL and the Australasian Premiere of the award-winning UK thriller THE RECLAIMERS, further furry fun, with a 45th Anniversary screening of the robo-dog family romp, C.H.O.M.P.S.; direct from its World Premiere at the prestigious Fantasia International Film Festival comes the most challenging and controversial film the festival has ever screened, BLACK EYED SUSAN; and, the Closing Night World Premiere of the one-take subterranean thriller SCURRY, from director Luke Sparke (OCCUPATION RAINFALL).
What makes the Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival stand out from other film festivals is that most of the films in its line-up have been pledged via cold submission, which means that it relies heavily on independent filmmakers to contribute through the open submission process. Doing so helps ensure that indie filmmakers are supported and have a better chance of being screened during the event.
The Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival runs over three days in September at Event Cinemas on George Street.
