Killara is a suburb tucked away in Sydney’s Upper North Shore; 14 kilometres from the CBD. The suburb is in the local government area of Ku-ring-gai Council, and despite the similarity of names, East Killara is a different suburb and must not be confused with West Killara, which is within Killara.
The name of this suburb has its root in an Aboriginal word that means ‘permanently’. This name was selected following the opening of the railway line at the turn of the 19th century.

What Killara lacks in the commercial scene, it makes up for with its quirky attractions. First stop over at the Killara Kouse, also known as the Harry and Penelope Seidler House after its owners. The heritage-listed house boasts a modernist style which visitors can explore by taking on guided tours. Make sure you enjoy the uninterrupted views that look over the natural bush reserve.
One of Killara’s best-kept secrets is the Swain Gardens. The gardens were developed by one Arthur Swain who, seeing the beautiful bushland in his backyard, slowly began to transform it into a serene country garden. Swain then gave the gardens over to the council who continue to maintain its beauty. Visit Shot Machine Creek and enjoy the present moment. Swain Gardens are also an excellent destination for outdoor events, complete with benches, BBQ facilities and a table.
Explore Greengate Park on Bruce Avenue. This lovely open space is idyllic for visiting families as it also has options for play equipment alongside a grassy area to unwind. There are several picnic areas and a gas BBQ for you to enjoy a relaxed picnic.
For the sports lovers, nothing beats the having a quick round of golf at the Killara Golf Club. With its large greens and well-tended fairways, there is no reason not to enjoy functions on location. While at it, make time to enjoy high tea at Portico Restaurant and Wine Bar or choose to explore Killara’s food scene at Salt Pepper Nutmeg Restaurant.
